2016 Boulder Mountain Tour

The Boulder Mt Tour is Saturday. This one is a bit of a challenge with the new snow in the forecast on race day. NOAA says:

Tonight (Thursday) : A 30 percent chance of snow, mainly before 11pm. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 9. West wind 8 to 17 mph, with gusts as high as 25 mph. New snow accumulation of less than a half inch possible.
Friday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 34. Wind chill values as low as -2. West wind 5 to 7 mph becoming calm in the morning.
Friday Night: A 20 percent chance of snow after 11pm. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 16. Southwest wind around 7 mph.
Saturday: Snow likely, mainly before 11am. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 33. West wind 9 to 15 mph, with gusts as high as 23 mph. Chance of precipitation is 70%. New snow accumulation of 1 to 2 inches possible.

The course has been groomed and it has been cold. Much of the course is in the shade. Sun Valley snow always skis colder than it measures. For those reasons I am going with what might appear to be Solda wax that is too cold.
GOOD WAX
Base: Solda HC28, scraped and brushed.
Paraffin: Solda Performance Green
BETTER WAX:
Base: Solda HC28 scraped and brushed
Paraffin: Solda F15 Green and F15 Violet mixed 50/50. Use the “hot crayon ” method.
BEST WAX:
Base: Solda HC28 scraped and brushed. Then apply a layer of Solda S30 Cold powder. Scrape while still warm and don’t brush.
Paraffin: Solda F40 Violet Special.
Powder: Top it off with Solda HP05/S30 mix, either the 70/30 or the 50/50.
Top Coat: Solda Powerjet 4, corked and brushed.

2016 Cote Dame Marie, Grayling, MI

The Cote Dame Marie Loppet
Grayling, MI
Michigan Cup 26km skate race
NOAA forecast:
Tonight: A chance of snow before 1am, then a chance of snow, freezing rain, and sleet. Cloudy, with a temperature rising to around 31 by 5am. East wind around 10 mph. Chance of precipitation is 50%.
Friday: Freezing rain and sleet likely before 10am, then rain likely between 10am and 4pm, then rain and snow likely after 4pm. Cloudy, with a high near 36. Southeast wind 5 to 10 mph. Chance of precipitation is 70%. Little or no ice accumulation expected. New snow and sleet accumulation of less than a half inch possible.
Friday Night: Snow likely, mainly before 7pm, then a chance of snow showers after 1am. Cloudy, with a low around 20. Northwest wind 5 to 15 mph. Chance of precipitation is 60%. New snow accumulation of less than one inch possible.
Saturday: Snow showers likely. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 22. West wind 10 to 15 mph. Chance of precipitation is 60%.
I hear from some of the local skiers that air temps are often lower at the race site than the NOAA forecast indicates. I am also guessing that the freezing rain, sleet and then drop in temperature when the grooming is taking place will produce a surface that is good and somewhat  transformed.

I would select a ski with a medium-stiff flex with some tip splay and a medium grind.

GOOD WAX:
Base: Solda UF7 and Performance Green mixed 50/50
BETTER  WAX:
Base: Solda UF7 and Performance Green mixed 50/50
Paraffin: Solda F31 Orange
BEST WAX:
Base: Cold crayon Solda HC28 on a clean base.  Then iron a 50/50 mix of Solda UF7 and Performance Green
Paraffin: Use Solda F40 Special Violet ( if you still have any left ). If no Violet and you have the new wax go with F40 Red Special
Powder: Solda HP05
Top: Roto cork Solda Powerjet 4
If there is powdery, new, coldish snow use Solda F31 Pink at the paraffin. Top with Solda S30 cold powder.

2016 Frosty Freestyle

The 2016 Frosty Freestyle is likely to be anything but frosty. Mostly raw, wet, gray.

The NOAA forecast on Thursday is:

Friday: Rain likely, mainly after noon. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 37. Southeast wind 6 to 9 mph. Chance of precipitation is 70%. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible.
Friday Night: Rain likely, mainly before 1am. Cloudy, with a low around 35. Southeast wind 7 to 9 mph becoming south southwest after midnight. Chance of precipitation is 70%. New precipitation amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch possible.
Saturday: A chance of rain after 1pm. Cloudy, with a high near 43. South southwest wind 5 to 7 mph becoming calm in the afternoon. Chance of precipitation is 30%.

The manmade snow is likely to be wet and dirty. Air temp at start around 40ºF ( 4ºC )
If you have the choice pick skis that have a stiff middle camber bridge and have relatively short contact zones and a wet-snow grind. If you are skiing classic, pick a ski with a good high wax pocket that will take klister and some tip and tail splay. Prepare the clean base on the ski and then:
Good Wax:
Base: Solda FC27 carbon wax. Iron, Scrape and brush.
Paraffin: Solda UF7.  Iron in a couple layers of this wide range LF paraffin.
Better Wax:
Base: Solda FC27 carbon wax.
Paraffin: Solda F31 Yellow and F31 Red mixed 50/50.
Best Wax:
Base: Solda FC27 carbon wax. Iron, scrape and brush.
Paraffin: Solda F40 Carbon Yellow and F40 Carbon Red mixed  2:1 (yellow to red) . Scrape and brush.
Powder: Solda Fuor 100
Top Coat: Solda Fuor Gel. Apply a few drops evenly spaced along each side of the groove. Spread with a clean sponge or soft cloth. When dry, polish with fiberlene.
Structure: You might want to add some structure to the base. Do this after paraffin application and before burning powders. Too much structure will pick up dirt. So I would use a medium broken pattern on the rear 2/3 of the ski and a medium linear from tip to tail on a skate ski. Use a medium linear tip to tail on a classic ski.
KICK WAX:

Probably use your favorite Silver Klister.

2015 Great Nordeen, Mt Bachelor, Oregon

This mass start skate race hosted by Mt Bachelor Sports Education Foundation has a 26km or 13km option. Current conditions are spring-like, 52F and sunny. Look for warmer temps tomorrow. Friday night low of 43F with a slight chance of rain. 43F at start time of 9:00 a.m. with a 50% chance of rain.

Structure: a medium linear structure would be good to apply to the front 1/3 of the ski with medium V or interupeted pattern on the back 2/3 of the ski. do this after the paraffin and before the fluor powder.

I will offer three Solda glide wax options for differing wax budgets.

GOOD GLIDE:

Start with a base of Solda FC27, scraped and brushed. Then apply a layer or two of Solda UF7.

BETTER GLIDE:

Base: Solda FC27 scraped and brushed. Then a layer of Solda UF7

Paraffin: Solda F15 Yellow.

BEST GLIDE:

Base: Solda FC27 scraped and brushed. Then apply a layer of Solda UF7. Now rub on a dry layer of Solda Fluor Plus.

Paraffin: Over the Solda Fluor Plus apply a layer of Solda F40 Carbon Yellow. Iron this three times carefully. Allow ski and wax to cool between passes. This will blend the Plus Dice with the F40 Yellow.

Finish: Apply a layer of the Solda Fluor 100 warm powder. You could top with Powerjet 5.

2012 Trapp’s Lager Marathon, Stowe, VT

This classic, mass start race hosted by Trapp Family Lodge near Stowe has a 25km or 50km option. Current conditions are spring-like. The low tonight , Thursday, is forecast to be 12F. Looks like a cloudy day Friday with a high of 31F. Friday night low of 22F with a slight chance of snow. Look for klister conditions and 30F at the start. Sleet, rain and snow mix is forecast for Saturday until 1:00 p.m. then rain.

Structure: a medium linear structure would be good to apply after glide waxing.

Paraffin: Over the Solda Fluor Plus apply a layer of Solda F40 Yellow Special. Iron this three times carefully. Allow ski and wax to cool between passes. This will blend the Plus Dice with the F40 Yellow.

Finish: Apply a layer of the Solda Fluor 100 warm powder. You could top with Powerjet 5.

KICK WAX:

Apply a klister binder and smooth with thumb or cork. Let it cool. Then I would try Rode Multigrade. If there is some new snow to contend with cover the klister with Rode Violet 0C.
